German law blocking mobile location based social networks (and why Google is breaking German law)

angela-i

A while ago, the law in Germany around location based mobile services changed. Due to the changes, it’s not allowed anymore to show your location to other users, unless you have given your WRITTEN consent to the service provider. So, if you want to use Nulaz in Germany, you have to write us a letter. We had a lot of problems with this, and our service in Germany (which is connected to all the operators for location) has become pretty lame because of it. This also means that all locations based services that can be used in Germany are breaking the law, including Google’s Lattitude.

If this law would be generally applied and your little brother would ask you to tell your mother where she should pick him up, you would have to tell him to write you a letter with his written consent to give his location information to a third party.

The fun part of this sage is that we have actually received a letter, which we have framed and has got a special place in our office.

Apple, will you let us (and 50.000 visitors) down?

Dance Valley for iPhone

In two days, there is a big dance festival in the Netherlands, called Dance Valley. Together with Hyves, UDC, and Heineken Refreshing sounds, we have created a mobile map for it. Also for the iPhone. However, it’s been two weeks since we’ve applied to Apple, and we’re still not in the app store.

It’s a nice application with a GPS enabled festival map, the line-up, all the info points (like toilets, food, etc) and it has a connection with a big Hyves screen that you can post your updates to.

I admit it, we were a bit late, but it’s about time that Apple puts the us in the store. We have 2 days left, and we haven’t heard anything from them yet. We got the request from Heineken very late, and we’ve worked hard to apply to the store in time.

This issue with uncertainty about how long the admission process will take and whether Apple will actually approve the application will hold us (and most probably also other companies) back to develop such an event based application again.

For people without an iPhone, you can get the application by filling in your phone number below:

Nulaz available in Blackberry App World

Even though we can not access the store from here in Amsterdam, we are available in it. For free! The application process took a while and they were very picky on the screenshots for some reason, but finally we made it. These stores and their submission procedures are a bit mystic, but it is defenitely a good way for us to reach a lot of people. So go ahead and see what we’ve got in store for you!
